Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about commissioning a Clanmalier signet ring. If your question isn't answered here, email [email protected] or call us free on 0-800-707-4050.
How do I find the right ring size?
The most accurate way is to have your finger measured at a jewellery shop, which most will do free of charge. If that isn't practical, either of these methods works well at home.
Measure your finger. Wrap a strip of paper or a piece of string around the finger you'll wear the ring on, and mark where it meets. Lay it flat, measure the length to the mark in millimetres, and find the closest circumference in the chart below.
Measure a ring that already fits. Choose a ring that fits the same finger well. Measure straight across the inside, edge to edge, in millimetres, and find the closest inside diameter in the chart.
A few tips: measure at the end of the day when your fingers are warm, make sure the ring will pass over your knuckle, and if you're between two sizes, choose the larger, as signet rings have a wider band than most rings. Buying as a gift? Borrow a ring the wearer already has on the same finger. And if the fit isn't right when your ring arrives, resizing is free.

Can you help me choose the right metal, ring shape and engraving style?
Yes. You don't need to know the terminology. Tell us who the ring is for and what you have in mind, and we'll explain the options in plain English: sterling silver, gold-plated sterling silver, 9ct or 14ct yellow gold, or 14ct white gold, the shape and size of the face, and the engraving style that will suit the design.
We'll recommend what will look and wear best for the person, not simply the most expensive option.
Can I personalise my ring with initials, a crest, a coat of arms or my own design?
Every Clanmalier ring is made to order, so personalisation isn't an extra. It's the whole point. You can choose initials or a monogram, a crest or coat of arms, or a design of your own.
If you have an existing crest or coat of arms, send us any artwork, photographs or documents you have. We can work from old family jewellery, faded prints and hand-drawn sketches. If you're starting from your family name, we can research the heraldry associated with it and show you what we find. A coat of arms traditionally belongs to a particular person or line rather than to everyone with a surname, so we'll explain clearly what we've found and where it comes from.
Will I be able to approve my engraving design before work begins?
Yes. Before anything is made, we send you a design proof showing exactly how your ring will look, including the engraving. If anything needs changing, tell us and we'll send a revised proof. We only begin making your ring once you've approved it.
Please check names, initials and spellings carefully at this stage, as the engraving is cut to the approved design.
How can I see what the finished ring will look like on my hand?
Your design proof shows the ring face at its actual proportions, and we'll give you the face dimensions in millimetres. Photographs online often make engraving look larger than it is, so if you'd like a better sense of scale, ask us and we'll send photographs of a similar finished ring being worn.
How long will my custom ring take to make, and can it arrive for a special occasion?
Your ring will be with you within two weeks of approving your design.
If you need it for a particular date, such as a birthday or a wedding, tell us when you enquire and we'll confirm the timing before you order. For Christmas, please enquire by Tuesday 1 December and approve your design by Tuesday 8 December.
What is included in the price, and are there any additional charges?
Prices start from £225 in sterling silver, £300 in gold-plated sterling silver and £1,800 in solid gold. The exact price depends on the metal, the size of the ring and the detail of the design, and we confirm it in writing before you order.
Your price includes the design work, the engraving, an official hallmark and a gift box, so your ring arrives ready to give as a present. Delivery is duties paid: there are no customs charges or extra fees when it arrives. Resizing is free.
Payment is taken in full when you place your order.
What happens if my ring does not fit, there is a problem, or I need to return it?
Free resizing is included with every order. If your ring doesn't fit, contact us and we'll arrange it.
If there's a fault with your ring, we'll put it right. Because every ring is made to your own specification, bespoke pieces can't be returned simply for a change of mind. This is why we ask you to approve your design before we begin.

Can I use my family's coat of arms?
Many families have a crest or coat of arms associated with their surname, and these make some of the most meaningful signet rings. Strictly speaking, a coat of arms is granted to an individual and passed down a particular line, so we don't claim that a design belongs to everyone with a given name. If you have a family piece or documents showing your arms, we can reproduce them faithfully. If not, we can show you the heraldry historically associated with your name, or help you create a personal design of your own.
